Bisexuality into the 1970s, then, had been a complex and contested category of identification. People who had been drawn to numerous genders did maybe maybe not recognize as bisexual.

Certainly one of my interviewees, Curtis (b. 1958) stated he ‘just didn’t think about the expressed term bisexual’. 43 other people, for instance the Hall Carpenter Oral History venture interviewee Christopher (b. 1944), had more politicized rejections of this term: ‘I’m oppressed due to homosexual oppression.
